Colonel David "Mickey" Marcus

The Story

A West Point graduate, decorated veteran of the Normandy campaign, and a legal advisor at Nuremberg — in 1948 David Ben-Gurion named him Aluf, Israel’s first modern general. He helped break the siege of Jerusalem by opening the “Burma Road,” and fell at Abu Ghosh just days before the first truce of the War of Independence. He rests at the United States Military Academy, where each spring the American Veterans of Israel gather to remember him and the 41 North American MACHAL volunteers who fell alongside him.
